From Tennyson down to West Beach, these are coastal roofs and they need a coastal specification. Marine-grade mounting, hardware chosen for salt air, and installation by our own accredited team rather than subcontractors.
The strip running from Tennyson and Grange through Henley Beach and down to West Beach is mostly detached housing on generous blocks, which is close to ideal for solar. There is a lot of postwar and 1960s to 1970s stock with simple hip and gable roofs and plenty of unshaded area, alongside a steady stream of knock-down rebuilds with modern roof geometry. Behind the beachfront, through Seaton, Findon, Fulham and West Lakes, the housing is similar and the blocks are often larger again. Very little of it presents a difficult install, which means the difference between quotes here comes down to specification and who does the work.
Homes near the water need a different specification to homes inland, and it is the single most common thing done badly on the coast. Salt carried on the sea breeze attacks the parts of a solar system nobody looks at: the mounting rails, the roof feet, the fixings and the frames around the panels. A system built to a standard inland specification can look fine for three or four years and then start showing corrosion at every bracket. We specify marine-grade mounting hardware and anodised framing for coastal installs, and we set the system back from exposed edges where the roof allows it.
West Lakes is worth a separate mention because of the water. Homes backing onto the lake catch the same salt-laden air as the beachfront, and a surprising number of quotes treat them as ordinary inland suburbs. They are not. The same coastal specification applies.
